In 1985, few retailers specialized in providing supplies and information for attracting and feeding backyard birds when George Petrides, Sr. opened his first Wild Bird Center store in a Washington, D.C. suburb. There are now more than 100 Wild Bird Center stores and dealers throughout the United States and Canada, each sharing expertise and products specializing in wild bird feeding and watching with their customers and communities.
Petrides, Sr. also developed several bird feeder patents including the famous "Upside-Down" feeder, especially designed to attract goldfinches, a favorite of backyard birders everywhere. Many years of experience with customers and vendors helps the company supply over 200 private-label backyard bird products to its outlets.
In 2011, George Petrides, Jr., replaced his father as Chief Executive Officer. Petrides, Jr. commented: "After working at every level within the company for 20 years, the Wild Bird Centers has been a long-standing and important part of my professional life. I am proud to serve and work with our franchisees, employees and business partners to chart our course into this new decade."
