Thanks to all who participated in the 2008 Big Sit at Crowley Museum & Nature Center. This event was an overwhelming success despite the long hours, and hungry mosquitoes. Official results for all 205 circles can be viewed at the following web site.

The Big Sit Results

The Wild Bird Center team recorded at total of 39 species. My personal standouts include the owls responding to our calls even before light; the Crested Caracara perched in a tree near the circle; a Roseate Spoonbill flying overhead in the early morning sunshine; soaring vultures, Wood Storks and Bald Eagles (an immature and an adult); and multiple warblers in the tall grass and high above in the trees overhead. The day ended following a brief thunderstorm but not before a Great Blue Heron made its presence known as our final bird.

Special thanks to Crowley Museum & Nature Center for hosting the circle and providing such a rich environment to watch birds.

Wild Bird Center

The Wild Bird Center is your ultimate backyard nature store. Stop by and check out our large selection of feeders, nesting supplies and premium seed selections. We have lots of ideas for the backyard wildlife enthusiast. We have a wide selection of binoculars and spotting scopes, the most current field guides, and nature oriented gifts for all ages.

There are several opportunities to get out and enjoy the nice Florida weather. The Sarasota Audubon Society has guided bird walks of the Celery Fields starting at 8:00am the second Saturday of each month, October through April. This is a great opportunity to brush up on your birding skills or learn from others how to be a good bird watcher. The Sarasota Audubon Society monthly meetings are the 2nd Monday of the month October through May.

The Manatee Audubon Society offers a tour of the Felts Preserve the first Saturday of the month from 8:00am - 12 noon. This is a 30 acre parcel of land being developed by the Manatee Audubon Society for environmental education. Over 100 species of animals use this property including many migratory birds. The Manatee Audubon Society meets the third Thursday of the month through April.

More information on our local Audubon Societies is available at the Wild Bird Center.
